  1. I couldn’t stop laughing about the Zorro cosplay costume comment. Soooo true. I swear the costume department in Merlin had a cowboy fixation with Merlin’s kerchief, Arthur’s duster coat, and then Aredian’s outfit.

I totally agree about Gwen telling Arthur to listen about Gaius and how it didn’t make sense. Merlin should have been the one to push Arthur to investigate in the Gaius gonna burn scene.

I also agree with how powerful that last scene between Uther and Gaius was. The dialogue was just so gorgeous.

  2. (Sorry for reposting my full comment here, but I gave up on Tumblr!)

I want to thank you for this review episode. I enjoyed it immensely. It’s entertaining to hear you two dissecting the episodes. You obviously have fun doing it, but you also have a lot of good analysis and comments, – you take the show seriously even as you take the show on its own terms.

This has always been high on my list of good episodes. Colin’s acting, and Charles Dance, and the A/M interactions are all great. Loved hearing your takes on these elements. For an unusually dark Early Merlin episode, there’s an abrupt tonal shift to comedy towards the end that doesn’t sit well with me, and I thought your comments surrounding that were on point.

Also I hate the Morgana Damsel In Distress hostage situation at the end – my HC Morgana would never have been so helpless. Good to hear you addressing that, too. Sorry for breaking up my comment but Tumblr wouldn’t accept longer comments today!

Oh, and I’m sure others have already commented on this, but Belladonna was in fact used by women to get ‘pretty eyes’ according to Wikipedia: “Linnaeus chose the species name belladonna (“beautiful woman” in Italian) in reference to the cosmetic use of the plant during the Renaissance, when women used the juice of the berries in eyedrops intended to dilate the pupils and make the eyes appear more seductive.” This use was known already in Roman times.
