IMO, Gaius was using Merlin’s room for a storage area before Merlin came. Plus I always thought that Gaius wanted to kind of block Merlin’s comings and goings and he probably figured he could always be woken up by Merlin and his clumsiness as he tries to sneak past Gaius. Unfortunately, Gaius sleeps like a log.
Merlin’s smile sliding off his face near the end of the episode just tears my heart! It’s so sad.
