Ok, I refuse to believe that he sacrificed himself for Guinevere. You can see him making the decision as he sees how important Merlin is (with the water spirits and the dragon) and so he decides to give his life so that Merlin can fulfill his destiny. This could just be my love for that Merlin/Lancelot relationship, but I believe Lancelot sacrificed himself for Merlin because if Merlin died Arthur would have still survived.
